Vydajuščijsja poėt i dramaturg Aleksandr Petrovič Sumarokov (1717 - 1777) byl avtorom pervych russkich opernych libretto. Muzyku k nim napisali italjanskij kompozitor Frančesko Arajja (1709 - 1771) i nemeckij maėstro German Fridrich Raupach (1728 - 1778), služivšie pri rossijskom imperatorskom dvore. Opery "Cefal i Prokris" (1755) i "Alcesta" (1758) stali ukrašeniem svetskoj žizni Sankt-Peterburga XVIII veka i vnesli suščestvennyj vklad v razvitie russkogo teatra. V nastojaščej knige teksty libretto dany v strogo sverennom s originalom vide i s podrobnymi kommentarijami.
